Race Rules & Regulations

Upon signing a waiver of liability in the registration process, all participants hereby agree to the following:

·         All teams must be four (4) paddlers

·         Women's teams must consist of only female paddlers, men's teams must consist of only male paddlers

·         Mixed teams must not consist of more male paddlers than female paddlers.

·         It is the responsibility of the team to ensure their boat is weight balanced to the best of their ability

·         It is the responsibility of the team to ensure that their team meets the gender ratio requirements

·         All paddlers must sign a waiver of release prior to participating

·         One paddler may register on multiple teams, but will be required to pay a fee for every team registered

·         Paddles and life jackets will be provided, all other equipment for use in the event are to be approved by the organizers

·         All equipment provided by the organizers must be returned to the organizers intact and in full

·         Seating pads made of foam or other materials are permitted up to a maximum of 15mm or 9/16-inch thickness and 33cm in length

·         Absolutely no outside shoes will be permitted on the pool deck or on the boat - water shoes, sandals, or bare feet are recommended

·         Participants must obey the instructions of the life guards and safety personnel at all times

·         All accidents and injuries must be reported immediately to the organizers

·         No one is permitted in the water while a race is in progress

·         All participants at all times will practice good sportsmanship. A participant who does not could face disqualification at the discretion of the organizers

·         Races will begin with the standard start calls: "paddlers ready", "attention", 1-3 second pause, then "go"

·         A false start will be called if any boat starts moving beyond the centre line, or any paddler starts paddling after the "attention" call, but before the race has begun

·         Races are won when the flag in front of the opposing team crosses the centre line

·         If neither team is able to get their paddlers across the centre line after 2 minutes, the race will be determined a tie and the teams will re-race

·         If a team is not present for their scheduled race, they will be removed from that race and replaced - placement back into the lineup is at the discretion of the organizers

·         Teams should make every effort to load and unload the boats as quickly as possible

·         Upon unloading the boat, the crew should leave the loading zone as quickly as possible

·         Placement in heats will be randomized, and each team will advance in accordance with the structure of the scheduled competitive rounds

·         Race results and heat placement are at the discretion of the organizers and cannot be contested

·         Protests and appeals will be limited to race conduct and rule infractions only - results cannot be contested

·         All teams shall be eligible for awards and prizes as determined by the organizers

·         Upon completion of the event, all participants must vacate the facility in a timely manner

Permitting their participation in the event, all participants agree:

·         To waive any and all claims that I have or may have in the future against the University of Calgary, the Calgary Dragon Boat Society, and their members, officers, employees, students, agents, volunteers and independent contractors.

·         To release the University of Calgary, the Calgary Dragon Boat Society, and their members, officers, employees, students, agents, volunteers and independent contractors from any and all liability for any loss, damage, injury or expense that I may suffer, or that my next of kin may suffer as a result of my participation in the event due to any cause whatsoever including negligence. 

·         To hold harmless and indemnify the University of Calgary and the Calgary Dragon Boat Society from any and all liability for any damage to the property of, or personal injury to, any third party, resulting from my participation in the event

·         If using personal equipment, participants are responsible for ensuring that it is safe and well maintained and up to the requisite standards for the event. Participants understand that the University of Calgary and the Calgary Dragon Boat Society accept no responsibility for any damage or loss to my personal equipment resulting from my participation in the event. 

Any participant who does not agree to the above rules & regulations will not be permitted to register or participate in the event. 

Media Release

By registering for the event, you consent that you or your dependent could be photographed, filmed, or otherwise recorded as part of the Calgary Dragon Boat Society and the University of Calgary's advertising, marketing, social media, and promotional activities. You also consent to any use of that media in perpetuity without compensation to you. 

If you do not consent to the above media release, you will be marked in a noticeable manner and your/your dependent's image will not be used in the event's advertising, marketing, social media, or promotional activities.
